Hi, that’s me!
I’m Ebony Sera, author of The Mindborn and what I hope will become a full series. I’m so glad you are entering the Mindborn world. Welcome!
In my hand is the Mindborn logo, a gift from my daughter and her 3D printer, and in the background is the beta version of the book, sitting in my library. It was my favorite Christmas pic!
Other than writing, I love reading. Perhaps more. Anything with a story, including graphic novels, manga, and books. Nonfiction bores me to death. Okay, there. I said it.
Growing up in Italy, my generation was raised on Topolino - Italy’s long-running weekly Disney comics magazine. The Italian stories were awesomely close to reality. I learned about black holes from an Uncle Scrooge story where he tried to get rid of trash using one as a giant vacuum. I learned history and literature through those comics too. I still recall how much fun it was to have an afternoon off, climb into my parents' attic, where my four siblings' old comics were kept, and spend hours lost in them as the rain ticked the ceiling.
The books I’m most attached to are the ones built on big friendships. Stephen King’s It and The Body. The Lord of the Rings. More recently, on the YA side, I’ve enjoyed Red Queen, Scythe, Legend, The Memory Thief, The Infinity Courts, and many others I may be forgetting. And I’m also fond of books that aren’t filed under “kids,” but are about kids. Ishiguro’s Klara and the Sun somehow stole my heart this past winter break.
I don't think I ever fully outgrew my adolescent passion for stories. Maybe that's precisely why my own story ended up there.
My favorite lines ever:
“I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?”
Yep, that’s King, The Body.
“I can’t carry it for you, but I can carry you”
Samwise Gamgee to Frodo, The Lord of the Rings.
Now you know me through my favorite books, and that tells you more than any short bio could.
